Black Jack

Blackjack is one of the most popular casino games because it offers the best odds for the player. It is normally played with 1 to eight decks of cards.

Value of cards:

CardsValue
2 – 10face value
Face cards10
Ace1 or 11

The object of the game is to beat the dealer by getting as close to 21 as possible without going over the value 21 itself. If a player or dealer goes over 21 he/she is ‘bust’ and automatically loses that hand. A winning hand wins the value of its original wager.

The game starts with each player placing a wager. The dealer then deals 2 face-up cards to everyone and one-up one-down to himself. Players may then draw cards (hit) or stay on their current totals (stand). Once all players have finished taking cards, the dealer then plays out his hand according to the following house rules:

· Dealer MUST ‘hit’ until he reaches a score of 17 or more*

· If the dealer ‘busts’ all players who have not bust themselves will automatically win.

Other important aspects of the game:

Push:

When the dealer and player have the same card value and the hand is a tie. Nothing is one or lost.

Blackjack:

This is the best hand in the House. Blackjack consists of an ace and any 10-point card. It typically pays out at 3:2.

Double:

A player may double if he/she feels that one more card will be enough to win the hand. The player signifies intention to double by placing another bet alongside the original after the first two cards have been dealt. The dealer will then deal one, and only one more card to that player when his/her turn comes around. Some casinos allow doubling on any 2 cards while others limit doubling hands to values of 9, 10 and 11.

Split:

If a player’s first two cards are the same, they may be split into two separate hands. Another wager for the new hand is compulsory, effectively doubling the initial bet. The player then plays each hand individually. Re-splits are normally permitted and doubling after splitting is allowed in most casinos.

Surrender:

A few casinos offer the option to surrender. This means that if a player is not happy with his/her hand before receiving a third card, the player may surrender the hand and consequently forfeit half the original bet.

Insurance:

This is offered when the dealer has an Ace showing. Players are given the option to take out insurance on the dealer drawing Blackjack. Insurance, which is paid out at 2:1, is realised in the event of the dealer getting Blackjack. Insurance is normally offered at a minimum of half the player’s original bet.
* In some casinos dealers must ‘hit’ on soft 17. This means that they have a total of 17, comprising an Ace and any number of cards totaling 6.

Video Poker

There are many different varieties of video poker. The generic game is based on ordinary draw poker whereby the player receives 5 cards and selects to hold any number of them and re-draw the rest, to hopefully achieve the best possible poker hand. The key to understanding how each version works is to scrutinise the payout table before taking the plunge. Each version of video poker demands a different strategy and prospective players would be well advised to play for fun before trying a new variation.

Some of the more common video poker games include Jacks or Better, Joker Poker, Pick em Poker and Double Bonus Poker.

Players typically have the option to play up to 5 times the base bet for any particular game. This is termed the maximum bet. If a player has selected a 50p entry level for a game, the maximum bet for that particular game would be £2.50.

In most games, a player is given the option of increasing his/her winnings by doubling after a win. This involves selecting any one of four cards in an effort to beat the dealer’s card, which is turned up first. The highest card wins. If this happens to be the player’s card, winnings are doubled and another option to double up that amount is given.

Typical order of ranking for poker hands:

1 pair

2 pairs

3 of a kind

Straight

Flush

Full House

Four of a kind

Straight Flush

Five of a kind (with joker)

Royal Flush

Baccarat

The essence of Baccarat lies in the Players ability to predict which hand is going to win… either his/her own or the bankers. There is also the option of selecting a tie, which pays the most.

The winning hand will be the hand that comes closest to the value 9.

Cards have values as follows:

A=1
2 – 9=face Value
10=0
Picture cards=0

Player and dealer are dealt two cards each. If either total is more than 9, then the value of the hand needs to be adjusted by subtracting 10 from the total. A third card may, or may not be dealt according to the following rules:

0-5 Players Hand Must Draw

6-7 Players Hand Must Stand

8-9 "Natural" (Both Hands Stand)

After the Player's Hand acts on a third card draw, the Banker's Hand receives a third card according to these rules:

0-2 Banker must draw

3-6 Third card to Player's hand determines draw or stand

7 Banker's Hand Must Stand

When the Banker's two cards total between 3-6:

A winning hand receives a 1 to 1 payout, while a correctly predicted tie pays out at 8 to 1.

Craps

The objective of Craps is to predict the outcome of a roll of the dice. The underlying idea is to establish a "point" number and roll that number again before rolling a 7 (craps). Only the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10 can be point numbers and all other rolls on the dice have special meanings depending on when they are rolled (before or after a point is established).

A new game in Craps begins with a ""Come Out"" roll. This can only be made when the previous dice thrower (termed a ‘shooter’) fails to make a winning roll - more correctly known as "not making the "Point"" or "seven out". A new game then begins with a new shooter. If the current shooter does make his "Point", the dice are returned to him and he then begins the new "Come Out" roll. This is a continuation of that shooter's roll.

In the game of Craps, there are numerous different types of bets:

On the "Come Out" roll, the "Pass Line" bet wins if the shooter rolls a 7 or an 11. The bet loses automatically if the shooter rolls 2, 3 or 12. If the shooter rolls 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 the shooter must roll this same number again (to win) before rolling the number 7. Rolling any of these numbers on the "Come Out" roll is called "establishing the "Point". Any number so rolled is thereafter referred to as the "Point".

Once the shooter establishes a "Point" a "Don't Pass" bet stays in action until the shooter rolls a 7 or make his/her "Point". A "Don't Pass" bet wins if the shooter fails to make his "Point", but loses if the shooter does make the "Point". One can also take odds on a "Don't Pass" bet.

There are many other betting options and side bets that one can take in the game of Craps. It is recommended that a new Player play for fun or watch others play to get a full understanding.

Slots

Slots are straightforward to play. You insert your coins and spin the reels. There is a horizontal line across the window of the slot machine. If a certain combination falls on the horizontal line when the reels stop, you are a winner. Payouts vary.

It is generally believed that slot machines offer the worst odds in a casino. This would be close to the truth if every single table game player played a perfect game of blackjack/poker/baccarat/craps. It is true that bad bets at the craps table or blackjack table can give far worse odds than any slot machine.

There are generally two types of slots - straight slots and progressive slots. Straight slot will pay according to a defined schedule. Progressives will pay you in a similar way unless the jackpot is hit. When this happens, a large amount is usually won. In a progressive slot game, a percentage of each coin dropped in the slot machine is added to the jackpot. If no one hits a jackpot in a while, the pooled amount can grow to be very large.

Roulette

The game of roulette offers the opportunity to ‘win big’ off a relatively small bet. A small ball is spun on a round wheel. It eventually comes to rest in one of 37 numbered slots determining winners based on the various bets placed. There are numerous different types of bets in roulette. They can be summarized as follows:

Odds:

1 Number Straight Up 35 to 1

2 Numbers Split 17 to 1

3 Numbers Street Bet 11 to 1

4 Numbers Corner Bet 8 to 1

6 Numbers Line Bet 5 to 1

12 Numbers Column Bet/Dozen Bet 2 to 1

18 Numbers 1 to 1

There are also options to bet on black or red, odds or evens, low or high. A bet placed on Zero (0) will not benefit from any of these bets.

Roulette is all about predicting which number is going to come up next. It is without doubt one of the most popular casino games. It is full of suspense and excitement and also promises big rewards for those who are lucky with numbers.
